Week 1
Learn the Music
- Listen to quality recordings every day.
- Learn all the notes and rhythms.
- Mark up your music with breaths, dynamics, tricky rhythms, reminders, and anything your director tells you.
- Practice slowly enough that every repetition is correct.
Goal: Sing through every cut with the correct notes and rhythms.
Week 2
Learn the Text & Diction
- Learn every word.
- Translate any foreign-language text so you know what you're singing.
- Study the diction so your pronunciation is authentic and consistent. (Dr. Scott LaGraff has some excellent diction videos on TikTok!)
Goal: Sing confidently with accurate pronunciation and understand what you're communicating.
Week 3
Build Consistency
- Practice with a metronome.
- Gradually increase the tempo.
- Focus on the hardest measures instead of always starting at the beginning.
- Refine your breathing and phrasing.
Goal: Confident, accurate run-throughs.
Week 4
Make It Musical
- Focus on tone quality and vowel consistency.
- Shape your phrases.
- Add dynamics and expression.
- Think about the story and emotion behind each piece.
Goal: Make music, not just notes.
Week 5
Get Feedback
- Sing for your choir director, private voice teacher, section leader, or a trusted musician.
- Record yourself and listen critically.
- Make adjustments based on the feedback you receive.
- Continue polishing the details.
Goal: Turn good practice into great performances.
Week 6
Practice the Audition
- Run mock auditions from start to finish.
- Practice walking in, taking a breath, and singing without restarting.
- Keep your voice healthy with rest and hydration.
- Trust the preparation you've put in.
Goal: Walk into your audition calm, confident, and ready.
One Final Tip
Consistency beats cramming every single time. Even 20–30 minutes of focused practice each day between now and auditions can make a huge difference.
