Every fall, over 70,000 Texas high school students begin the TMEA All-State audition process. By February, only the very best — roughly the top 3% — will perform at the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio. Understanding how that process works helps you support your student at every step without the guesswork.

This guide covers the 5A–6A Large School Choir (LSC) track, which is the most common path for students at larger schools. There is also a 1A–4A Small School track — the structure is similar but runs through different regions and fewer areas.

🎵 The Four Audition Rounds

The process has up to four rounds, each one narrowing the field. Click any round to expand the details.

0 Step
District Audition — not universal
⏰ Timing varies — typically September or October
Some districts hold their own audition round before Region. Many don't. Check with your director.
Some school districts or regions hold a local honor choir audition before the official TMEA Region audition. These events go by different names depending on where you are — "District Choir," "Pre-Region," "Honor Choir," or something else entirely. They are not part of the official TMEA All-State process.
No — and many schools don't have one at all. It varies widely by district, region, and director. Some directors use a local district event as a warm-up audition experience. Others skip straight to Region. Ask your student's choir director whether this applies to your school.
For first-year choir families, a district-level event can be a gentle introduction to competitive auditions before the higher-stakes Region round. Students get experience performing for judges without the full weight of the All-State process behind it.
The term "District Choir" does not always mean the same thing across Texas. At some schools it's a local honor choir. At others it's a completely different program. If you hear a term you don't recognize, the Choir Parent Glossary has plain-English explanations. View Glossary →
👩‍👧 Parent note If your student's first audition of the year is something called "District Choir" or "Honor Choir" and you're not sure how it fits into the bigger picture — that's completely normal. Texas choir has a lot of layers and not all of them are officially explained anywhere. Start by asking your director which events lead toward Region and the All-State process.
1 Round
Region Audition
⏰ Typically October or November
The first competitive audition — held locally within your student's TMEA Region.
Students perform the All-State audition music for a panel of judges. Each student is ranked within their voice part. Top-ranked students are selected for the Region Choir and advance to Pre-Area.
  • Prepared All-State repertoire (purchased in advance)
  • Sight-reading at some regions
Music is available each summer from TMEA's audition material page.
The number of students advancing varies by Region size. Each Region certifies up to 5 candidates per voice part for the 5A–6A Pre-Area audition.
Student earns a spot in the Region Choir — a recognized honor in itself — and advances to the next round.
👩‍👧 Parent note Making Region Choir is a genuine achievement. Many strong singers spend multiple years in Region before advancing further, and that's completely normal. Celebrate every chair.
2 Round
Pre-Area Audition
⏰ Typically early December
Students from multiple Regions compete together for the first time. Sight-reading is added.
Top students from each Region in the same Area compete against each other. This is the first round where your student sees how they rank against singers from neighboring regions.
  • All-State prepared repertoire
  • Sight-reading is required at this level
The top 5 students per voice part from each Region advance from Pre-Area to Area. In a 4-region Area, that means 20 singers per voice part compete at Area.
Student advances to the Area audition — one step away from All-State. This is a significant milestone.
👩‍👧 Parent note Pre-Area is where the field narrows fast. Summer choir camp work pays off here — students who know the music cold can focus entirely on their delivery rather than notes.
3 Round
Area Audition
⏰ Typically January
The final gatekeeping audition. Top chairs here earn membership in an All-State Choir.
The top Pre-Area qualifiers from all 4 Regions in the Area compete. Results are announced the same day. Students who advance learn which All-State choir they've been placed into.
  • Treble chairs 1–4 → All-State Mixed Choir
  • Tenor/Bass chairs 1–5 → All-State Mixed Choir
  • Treble chairs 5–11 → All-State Treble Choir
  • TB chairs 6–9 → All-State Tenor-Bass Choir
  • Remaining top chairs → named as Alternates
TMEA charges a $7 Area audition fee per student, billed to each Region.
All-State candidates attend a required meeting to receive their supplemental music packet and information about the TMEA Convention in February. All-State membership fee is $30.
👩‍👧 Parent note Making Area is already elite. Even students who don't advance to All-State at Area have accomplished something very few Texas choir students ever do. If your student makes it this far, that is a big deal — full stop.
4 Round
TMEA Convention — San Antonio
⏰ February · Henry B. González Convention Center
The All-State choirs rehearse and perform. This is the destination.
All-State choir members travel to San Antonio for several days of intensive rehearsals with nationally recognized conductors, followed by a public concert performance at the Henry B. González Convention Center.
The TMEA Clinic/Convention draws approximately 30,000 attendees — music educators, students, college faculty, and families. There are hundreds of clinics and performances happening throughout the event.
  • Concerts are ticketed public events
  • Students typically stay in a convention hotel
  • School chaperones travel with students
Details vary by school — check with your director for specifics.
$30 fee per student. Students receive their All-State supplemental music packet at the required Area meeting after results are announced.
👩‍👧 Parent note Book your hotel early if you plan to attend. The convention fills San Antonio hotels quickly. Check TMEA's convention planning page for official hotel information.

🎶 The Four All-State Choirs

Top qualifiers at Area are placed into one of four All-State choirs based on their chair placement and voice part.

The most prestigious All-State choir. Top chairs from both treble and tenor-bass voices at Area. Performs at the TMEA Convention.

5A–6A Treble Choir

SSAA

Top treble voices (sopranos and altos) who placed just below Mixed Choir level at Area. An honor in its own right.

5A–6A Tenor-Bass Choir

TTBB

Top tenor and bass voices who placed just below Mixed Choir level at Area. Performs at the TMEA Convention.

1A–4A Mixed Choir

SATB · Small School

For students from 1A–4A schools. Runs through 13 Regions and 5 Areas on a separate track from the large school process.

🗺️ 5A–6A Vocal Areas & Regions

Texas is divided into 32 active Regions for the 5A–6A vocal track, grouped into 8 Areas (A–H). Your student competes within their Region first, then against students from the other Regions in their Area. 💡 Things Worth Knowing

A Few Things That Help Families Navigate This

Start the Music Early All-State music is released each summer. Summer choir camps are the best way to get a head start before school begins.
Sight-Reading Matters Pre-Area and beyond include sight-reading. It's a separate skill that requires dedicated practice — not just knowing the audition pieces.
Chair Placements Count It's not just about making it — your rank at each level determines which All-State choir you're placed into.
Alternates Are Real Honors Being named an Alternate means you placed in the top tier but just below the cutoff. Alternates sometimes get called up if a selected student can't attend.
Both Tracks Exist The 5A–6A (Large School) and 1A–4A (Small School) tracks run simultaneously. Students may only audition in one track per year.
The Process Restarts Each Fall A student who made All-State last year has to earn it again this year. There are no guaranteed spots — which is part of what makes it meaningful.

❓ Common Parent Questions

Use the official TMEA 2024–2026 alignment tool — you can search by school district name to find your Region number, then cross-reference the Area chart above to find your Area. The 2026–2028 alignment takes effect starting in the 2026–2027 school year.
TMEA publishes the audition material each summer, typically by late July or early August, on the TMEA Vocal Audition Material page. Summer choir camps are held in June and July specifically so students can get a head start before the music is widely available. Check camp registration deadlines early — most fill before the music even drops.
No — summer camp is not required to participate in the All-State process. But camps can give students a significant head start on the music, and for students who want to advance past Region, that preparation often makes a real difference. Many students attend camps for the community and confidence-building just as much as the musical prep.
The 5A–6A (Large School / LSC) track is open to all students and leads to the All-State Mixed, Treble, and Tenor-Bass choirs. The 1A–4A (Small School / SSC) track is available only to students from UIL-classified 1A–4A schools, and leads to the All-State 1A–4A Mixed Choir. Students may only audition in one track per year. Both tracks ultimately perform at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio.
After Area results are announced, All-State students attend a required meeting to receive supplemental music and convention information. There is a $30 TMEA All-State membership fee. In February, students travel to San Antonio for the TMEA Clinic/Convention — several days of intensive rehearsals with nationally recognized conductors, followed by a public concert performance. Coordinate logistics (transportation, hotel, chaperones) directly with your student's choir director.
Yes, with some specific eligibility rules. TMEA has a dedicated homeschool eligibility page that outlines the requirements. Homeschool students who don't have a UIL school classification may default to the 5A–6A track — check the official page to confirm your student's eligibility before registering.
