One overwhelmed Texas choir parent, one confusing All-State process, and a resource that didn't exist yet — so I built it.
When my oldest child joined choir in sixth grade, I thought I knew what to expect.
Kids sing. They perform concerts. Maybe they go on a trip every now and then.
I was wrong.
It didn't take long before I realized that Texas choir has an entire language of its own. Suddenly everyone was talking about Region, Area, All-State, UIL, Pre-UIL, voice parts, clinics, auditions, and summer camps. Parents around me seemed to know exactly what was happening, while I was smiling politely and making a mental note to Google everything later.
Like most parents, I pieced things together one conversation at a time. A Facebook comment here. A handout there. A PDF buried somewhere on a school website. Helpful people were everywhere, but the information wasn't.
I kept thinking: "There has to be one place that explains all of this."
There wasn't. So I built it.
Professionally, I spend my days taking complicated information and making it easier to understand.
So when I found myself constantly piecing together information about Texas choir from websites, PDFs, Facebook groups, and conversations with other parents, I naturally started organizing it all into one place.
Before long, my own notes turned into guides, those guides became articles, and Texas Choir Corner was born.
Today, both of my children are involved in choir, and our family has spent countless hours driving to auditions, attending concerts, researching camps, learning new choir terminology, and trying to keep all the dates straight.
Every season teaches me something new, and every question I have usually becomes another article on this website.
My oldest joins choir in 6th grade. I learn there's a lot more to "choir" than I thought.
No single source explains Region, Area, All-State, UIL, and Pre-UIL in plain English.
My own notes turn into guides, my guides turn into articles, and this site is born.
Both of my kids are in choir now, and this site keeps growing right along with them.
If I've already asked the question myself, there's a good chance I've written about it here.
Texas Choir Corner is designed to make the Texas choir world a little easier to understand. Here you'll find:
My goal isn't to replace your student's choir director or official TMEA resources. It's to give parents one reliable place to start.
Texas Choir Corner is an unofficial, parent-created resource. It is not affiliated with TMEA, any school district, university, or choir camp.
While I work hard to keep information accurate and up to date, audition procedures, dates, fees, and camp details can change. Always verify important information directly with your student's choir director or the hosting organization.
Texas choir is an incredible community. I've watched students gain confidence, form lifelong friendships, discover a love for music, and accomplish things they never imagined possible.
My hope is that this website helps parents spend less time confused and searching for answers — and more time cheering from the audience.
Whether your student just joined choir yesterday or is preparing for All-State, I'm glad you're here. Welcome to Texas Choir Corner.
